Collaborative Engagement Program

Program objective

Metro Vancouver’s Collaborative Engagement Program aims to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion in our public engagement processes. This is achieved by collaborating with and hearing from people who otherwise may not be aware of or have access to opportunities to provide input. Metro Vancouver recognizes the need to adapt its engagement process to hear from diverse people with different life experiences who are impacted by Metro Vancouver’s solid waste policies, programs, and services. This includes organizations that support underrepresented or equity-denied communities, youth, seniors, Indigenous people, and environmental groups.

Nearly 20 not-for-profit organizations have participated in the program so far and have helped shape the draft solid waste management plan update. Watch the videos below to learn more:

Information on the Solid Waste Management Plan Update

Metro Vancouver's current Solid Waste Management Plan (2011) established goals and targets for waste reduction and recycling, and outlined strategies and actions for Metro Vancouver and its member jurisdictions. An updated solid waste management plan will build on the strengths of the current plan and identify opportunities for accelerated waste reduction and recycling while reducing greenhouse gases and promoting a circular economy.

In 2024, Metro Vancouver completed the idea generation phase of the plan update, where ideas were collected to inform potential strategies and actions for an updated plan. In 2025, the options analysis phase involved receiving feedback on potential strategies and actions that will be considered for inclusion in the updated solid waste management plan.
