Winston Street Sewer Project

Winston Street Sewer ProjectWinston Street Sewer Project

The Winston Street Sewer carries wastewater from the City of Burnaby to the Annacis Island Wastewater Treatment Plant in the City of Delta. To accommodate future growth in the City of Burnaby, and ensure continued protection of public health and the environment, Metro Vancouver is replacing the existing pipe with a new, larger pipe. It will be approximately 3.2 kilometers long and be installed by open trench and tunneling methods.

Work is ocurring over several years in phases. Tunneling construction for Phase Two started in May 2022 and is expected to be complete by the end of 2024, with restoration to follow.

Fact Sheet - Winston Street Sewer

Winston Street, from Lougheed Highway to east of Piper Avenue, City of Burnaby

Project Update Project Update

Tunnel drive construction and pipe installation is continuing to advance in scheduled segments. Work involves building shafts at specific locations then lowering and pushing pipe underground from one location to the next using a large tunnel boring machine.

There are four tunnel drives along the project area. Tunnel drives #1 and #2 are now complete, with chamber and underground finishing work continuing until approximately fall 2024. Once this is complete, traffic will return to normal. Tunneling equipment from launch site A is being moved to launch site B, with tunnel drives #3 and #4 starting in March 2024. Road restoration and paving will take place once all underground work is complete.

Read the full update in the March 2024 Newsletter.

3/19/2024 7:00:00 AM

Due to the nature of tunneling, equipment is required to run continuously to safely complete this work, therefore crews will be working 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Piling and other noisy activities will be scheduled to take place during the day. Noise levels will be monitored during construction and all work will comply with City of Burnaby bylaws or granted bylaw variances.
