Winston Street Sewer ProjectWinston Street Sewer Project

The Winston Street Sewer carries wastewater from the City of Burnaby to the Annacis Island Wastewater Treatment Plant in the City of Delta. To accommodate future growth in the City of Burnaby, and ensure continued protection of public health and the environment, Metro Vancouver is replacing the existing pipe with a new, larger pipe. It will be approximately 3.2 kilometers long and be installed by open trench and tunneling methods.

Work is occurring over several years in phases. Tunneling construction for Phase Two started in May 2022. The final section of tunneling is expected to be complete by the end of 2024, with underground finishing work and restoration to continue through to summer 2025.

Fact Sheet - Winston Street Sewer

Winston Street, from Lougheed Highway to east of Piper Avenue, City of BurnabyProject

Construction work progressing Construction work progressing

Metro Vancouver and our contractor, Pomerleau Bessac Joint Venture, understand that this work has been disruptive to the community. We had expected to be finished work on Winston Street west of Bainbridge Avenue sooner, however, we encountered supply chain issues and identified potential sink holes that needed to be repaired before allowing traffic back in this area safely. This section has been mostly restored and remaining repair work is underway. We expect to open up the western end of Winston Street to two-way traffic by the end of November. We appreciate the community's understanding and patience as we complete this important infrastructure project.

Tunnel construction for this phase of the project began in mid-2022. On the eastern end of the project, we are working on the final section of tunnelling, which is expected to be complete by the end of 2024. Underground finishing work and restoration will continue through to summer 2025. Finishing work and restoration will be significantly less disruptive than the tunneling activities.

Read the full update in the Winston Street Sewer Fall Project Update Newsletter.

11/4/2024 8:00:00 AM
