This upgrade was critical to extend the reservoir’s service life, improve its earthquake resilience, and ensure the continued delivery of high-quality drinking water to communities south of the Fraser River.

The reservoir was built in 1991 and consists of two units. Unit 1 upgrades were completed in 2020. Upgrades to unit 2 took place from fall 2025 to summer 2026.

Fact Sheet – Sunnyside Reservoir Seismic Upgrade

City of SurreyProject

To learn more about the bike park, please visit surrey.ca or call 604-501-5050.

Impacts and mitigationImpacts and mitigation

There will be no tree removal, trail closures, impacts to water supply or access restrictions to the South Surrey Recreation and Arts Centre during this project.

Most work will take place inside the reservoir. Temporary impacts include:

Parking: Approximately 50 parking spaces within the construction zone will be unavailable

Tennis court closure: The tennis courts will be closed until summer 2026

Noise: Construction vehicles and heavy machinery will increase noise in the area during work hours

Dust: Excavation work will generate dust near the site

Metro Vancouver has been working closely with the City of Surrey and local community groups to reduce impacts. Planned mitigation measures include:

Environment

Reduce the project footprint to avoid tree removal and trail closures

Discharge water into the parking lot catch basin or into holding tanks to prevent impacts on trails and the surrounding forest

Hire an environmental professional to monitor water discharge

Traffic and safety

Install fencing around the work zone to ensure park users can safely move through the area

Use traffic control personnel to redirect traffic during busy times

Noise and vibration

Cover noisy equipment

Monitor noise levels to ensure compliance with City of Surrey bylaws and granted variances

Air quality and dust

Clean construction vehicles before they leave the site

Water or sweep the site and surrounding area to keep it clean
