Coquitlam Water Main – Cape Horn SectionCoquitlam Water Main – Cape Horn Section<div class="ExternalClass34D5F66EBB324885874B098135312CB8"><p>Metro Vancouver is constructing a new water main in Coquitlam to meet the growing demand for drinking water in the region. The Coquitlam Water Main is approximately 12 kilometres long, and construction has been divided into four sections.</p><p>The Cape Horn Section of the Coquitlam Water Main is approximately four kilometres long, 2.2 metres in diameter, and runs from Westwood Street and Dewdney Trunk Road to Hickey Drive and Mariner Way. </p><p>Metro Vancouver is coordinating construction activities and schedules with the <a href="/services/water/Pages/dewdney-trunk-road-water-main.aspx" target="_blank">Dewdney Trunk Road Water Main project​</a>, to minimize construction impacts on the community.</p><p>Once all sections of the Coquitlam Water Main are constructed, Metro Vancouver will connect new infrastructure to the existing drinking water system. ​<br></p><ul class="fa-ul"><li> <span class="fa-li"> <i class="fa-light fa-file"></i></span> <a href="/services/water/ConstructionDocuments/fact-sheet-cwmp-cape-horn-section-dewdney-trunk-road-water-main.pdf" target="_blank" title="Coquitlam Water Main – Cape Horn Section fact sheet">Coquitlam Water Main – Cape Horn Section fact sheet</a><br></li></ul></div>City of CoquitlamProject

Project activitiesProject activities<div class="ExternalClassFA1D7594137148EFBD34279EE9A24605"><p> <strong>Site prepara​​​tion</strong></p><ul><li><p> Prepare the site:​ The contractor will install fencing, set up site trailers, and deliver construction materials and equipment.</p></li><li><p> Relocate existing utilities: Some utilities will be relocated to accommodate the new infrastructure.</p></li><li><p> Remove trees: 63 trees along Lougheed Highway between Dewdney Trunk Road and Como Lake Avenue will be removed to accommodate the new infrastructure. </p></li><li><p> Build a multi-use pathway: A new pathway along Sharpe Street between Burton Court and Wickham Drive will provide an alternate route for pedestrians and cyclists during construction.<br></p></li></ul><p> <strong>Constr​​ucti​​on</strong></p><ul><li><p>Install the water main: Water main will be constructed in segments where crews will excavate a trench, install shoring, install and weld steel pipes, backfill, and temporarily restore the area before moving to the next segment.</p></li><li><p>Construct two underground valve chambers: Two valve chambers will be constructed along Dewdney Trunk Road at Irvine Street and at Sharpe Street. This work will involve excavating a large pit, installing shoring, building a concrete structure, and installing piping and equipment to regulate the flow of water through the distribution system. </p></li><li><p>Construct a tunnel and tunnel shafts: The contractor will build vertical shafts and use a tunnel boring machine for a trenchless crossing under Lougheed Highway. Once tunnelling is complete, crews will install the water mains inside the tunnel. Restoration Restoration <div class="ExternalClass9E7B14BF8CAD48B3AE1F9D9C2AA28E0E"><p>All impacted areas including roadways, curbs, and landscaping will be restored to previous or better condition. </p><p>Metro Vancouver and the City of Coquitlam recognize the importance of trees in the community, and are committed to working together to meet tree restoration and replanting requirements. </p><p>We will share details about the restoration plans as they become available. ​</p></div>
Impacts and mitigationImpacts and mitigation<div class="ExternalClassBAF69A7C8E5E4CA99431948DAE7F53A7"><p>​​Metro Vancouver recognizes these projects will impact residents and businesses. During construction, the community will experience noise and vibration, parking restrictions, and partial or full road closures along the construction area. </p><p>Wherever possible, construction crews will implement measures to prevent or reduce construction impacts, including:</p><p><strong>Reduce noise and v​​ibration</strong></p><ul><li>Minimize nuisance noise such as idling or warming up heavy equipment</li><li>Monitor noise and vibration to ensure the work is compliant with City of Coquitlam’s bylaws</li></ul><p><strong>Keep people mo​​ving safely and efficiently</strong></p><ul><li>Place traffic control personnel, detour signage, and other traffic management resources to help people moving near work areas</li><li>Maintain access to homes; however, residents may experience delays while driving or parking</li><li>Ensure emergency service vehicles have access to residences and businesses</li><li>Ensure sidewalks and pedestrian paths remain accessible or have detour options</li><li>Maintain solid waste and recycling collection </li></ul><p><strong>Manage ​​​cleanliness, air quality, and dust</strong></p><ul><li>Sweep or water the construction site to keep the area clean</li><li>Cover construction vehicles, such as dump trucks, when travelling to and from site to reduce dust</li><li>Tidy the site at the end of each day</li></ul>​<br></div>
Work hours Work hours <div class="ExternalClass7BF0F8374CEE466797D13ED41DF5693D"><p>​​​​Typical hours of work will be:</p><ul><li><strong>Monday to Friday</strong>: 7:00 am to 8:00 pm</li><li><strong>Saturday</strong>: 9:00 am to 6:00 pm<br></li></ul>​ <p>All work will comply with City of Coquitlam bylaws or granted bylaw variances. There may be times when construction crews will need to work longer hours to complete critical activities safely and efficiently. Metro Vancouver will notify the community about these activities in advance.​<br></p></div>

Public comment periodPublic comment period<div class="ExternalClassF0B504D9469147A09476BCDAD92E4CF0"><p>Metro Vancouver held the public comment period for the Coquitlam Water Main - Cape Horn Section and Dewdney Trunk Road Water Main from September 8 to October 7, 2025.
