Chilco Street Shaft SiteChilco Street Shaft Site

The new Stanley Park Water Supply Tunnel will replace an existing water main that was built in the 1930s and is at the end of its service life. The new water supply tunnel is being built to withstand a major earthquake. Once complete, it will help the cities of Vancouver and Richmond meet the growing demand for water and ensure continued access to safe and clean drinking water for years to come.

This major infrastructure project will include the installation of new valve chambers and pipes that will connect the new water main to the region’s existing water distribution system. The project will include the installation of three tunnel shafts, including the Chilco Street shaft site located in Stanley Park, near the intersection of Chilco and Alberni Streets.

At this site, activities will include the construction of a shaft as well as chambers that will house underground pipes and valves to control the flow of the water supply, along with a backup power building. To reduce the construction footprint, the old valve chambers that are currently situated on the site will be removed and a new shaft and valve chamber will be constructed in the same area. The site will not be used to excavate the tunnel, which will help reduce construction impacts on the neighbourhood and keep the construction area relatively small.

Construction of the Stanley Park Water Supply Tunnel is expected to run from late 2024 through 2029.

Stanley Park Water Supply Tunnel – Chilco Street shaft site fact sheet

City of Vancouver
