Cambie-Richmond Water Supply TunnelCambie-Richmond Water Supply Tunnel

To increase the reliable delivery of high-quality drinking water, Metro Vancouver is planning to build a new water supply tunnel beneath the Fraser River. The project will feature a tunnel approximately 1.1 kilometers long and 4.5 meters in diameter, constructed deep beneath the riverbed. To connect the tunnel to the existing water system, deep vertical shafts will be built—one in Vancouver and one in Richmond—along with underground valve chambers. The project is currently in the design stage, and construction is anticipated to begin in 2029.

The Cambie-Richmond Water Supply Tunnel is one of the several new water supply tunnels in the region designed to withstand major earthquakes. It will also provide additional long-term supply capacity to meet increasing demand for the region’s growing population.

Fact Sheet - Cambie-Richmond Water Supply Tunnel

City of Vancouver and City of RichmondProject
