Burrard Inlet Shaft SiteBurrard Inlet Shaft Site

The new Stanley Park Water Supply Tunnel will replace an existing water main that was built in the 1930s and is at the end of its service life. The new water supply tunnel is being built to withstand a major earthquake. Once complete, it will help the cities of Vancouver and Richmond meet the growing demand for water and ensure continued access to safe and clean drinking water for years to come.

This major infrastructure project will include the installation of new valve chambers and pipes that will connect the new water main to the region’s existing water distribution system. The project will include the installation of three tunnel shafts, including the Burrard Inlet shaft site located in the northeast corner of the park, near Tunnel Trail.

At this site, the new main will connect to existing infrastructure that brings treated drinking water from the North Shore mountains under Burrard Inlet to a connection in Stanley Park. Work will include replacing the existing connection and constructing a new shaft and valve chamber. To reduce the construction footprint, the new shaft and valve chamber will be built to overlap a portion of the original 1930s excavation.

Construction of the Stanley Park Water Supply Tunnel is expected to run from late 2024 through 2029.

Stanley Park Water Supply Tunnel – Burrard Inlet shaft site fact sheet

City of Vancouver
