<strong>Prepare the site</strong>: Ahead of major construction activities, crews will install tree protection fencing, set up a site trailer, deliver equipment, install temporary fencing and signage, and identify utilities within the project area.</li><li>
<strong>Relocate existing utilities</strong>: Construction crews will relocate underground utilities to accommodate the new infrastructure.</li><li>
<strong>Install the water main</strong>: The new water main will be installed in segments. This work will involve excavating a large trench, placing wall supports to secure the excavated area, installing a steel pipe, and restoring the impacted roadway with temporary asphalt before moving to the next segment. </li><li>
<strong>Construct a tunnel and two tunnel shafts</strong>: Construction crews will build two eight-metre-deep shafts on 88 Avenue on either side of the Southern Railway. Then, a microtunnel boring machine will dig a 50-metre-long tunnel under the railway. Once tunnelling is complete, crews will install the new water main inside the tunnel. </li><li>
<strong>Construct three underground valve chambers</strong>: A large chamber will be constructed at the intersection of 90 Avenue and Holt Road. Two smaller chambers will be constructed on the south side of Kennedy Park. This work will include excavating a large pit for each valve chamber, installing wall supports, building a concrete structure, and installing piping and other equipment.</li><li>
<strong>Clean and test the new water main</strong>: The new water main will be pressure tested, disinfected, and flushed. </li><li>
<strong>Restore the project area</strong>: All impacted areas including roadways, curbs, and landscaping will be permanently restored to previous or better conditions.</li><li>
<strong>Connect the new water main</strong>: The new water main will be connected to the existing water distribution system.<br></li></ul></div></div> |

There may be times when construction crews will need to work longer hours to complete critical activities safely and efficiently. Metro Vancouver will notify the community about these activities in advance.<br></p></div> |

During construction, the community will experience noise and vibration, parking restrictions, and partial or full road closures along 90 Avenue, Holt Road, and 88 Avenue. <br></div><div><br></div><div>Wherever possible, construction crews will implement measures that will prevent or reduce construction impacts, including:<br></div><div><br></div><div><strong>Reduce noise and vibration</strong></div><div><ul><li>Avoid scheduling work that requires noisy or high-vibration equipment before 8:00 am </li><li>Minimize nuisance noise such as idling or warming up heavy equipment </li><li>Monitor noise and vibration periodically to ensure the work is compliant with the City of Surrey bylaws and granted bylaw variances</li></ul></div><div><strong>Keep people moving safely and efficiently</strong></div><div><ul><li>Place traffic control personnel, detour signage, and other traffic management resources to help people moving near work areas</li><li>Maintain access to homes as much as possible; however, residents may experience delays in accessing driveways when active construction is taking place outside of their home </li><li>Maintain at least one access point to businesses at all times</li><li>Ensure emergency service vehicles always have access to residences and businesses</li><li>Ensure sidewalks and pedestrian paths remain accessible or have detour options</li><li>Maintain access to the northern row of parking spots in Kennedy Park</li></ul></div><div><strong>Manage cleanliness, air quality, and dust</strong></div><div><ul><li>Water or sweep the streets to keep the site and surrounding areas clean</li><li>Cover construction vehicles, such as dump trucks, when travelling to and from the site, to reduce dust<br></li></ul></div></div> |
