If your household consists of five people – two adults and three kids – it is useful to have an Excel spreadsheet to record when people can use the washroom in the morning. I am extremely proud of my children. They are a great source of energy for me. One of my children, Mikey, submitted a design for the community gardens in our apartment complex, and won. I am very proud of their work, they are very good, and Mikey is planning to go into animation.

| | https://metrovancouver.org/services/housing/PublishingImages/Ari.jpg, Ari

Volunteering is important to me. It helps create a sense of unity. I volunteer with my daughter’s school and Girl Guides. I also love gardening. I was looking at a plot thinking we can plant a community garden, we could plant some stuff and we can, you know, make the place look nice. It’s uplifting to have flowers!

| | https://metrovancouver.org/services/housing/PublishingImages/Deidra.jpg, Deidra

I always want people to know I do really care about people succeeding and feeling good about what they’re doing. I hope that people know that they can come to me and ask for help and that I would do my best to enable them to grow into who they want to be and go on and succeed, even if it’s in other areas.

| | https://metrovancouver.org/services/housing/PublishingImages/Jade.jpg, Jade

And after I became the community garden coordinator, I started to help with Zoom and in-person garden workshops. My specialty is planning for pollinator plants and creating habitats for native species.

| | https://metrovancouver.org/services/housing/PublishingImages/Joni.jpg, Joni

My mom, when we were kids, worked at an Easter Seals camp in the summer. I would join her and volunteer at the camps. Now, after 15 years working as a general contractor, I work with the Metro Vancouver Housing team to help provide people with homes and try to make something better for our community. Outside of work you will find me spending time on the golf course or cheering on my kids, nieces, and nephews at their sporting events.

| | https://metrovancouver.org/services/housing/PublishingImages/Jotty.jpg, Jotty

I travelled up and down the east and west coasts of Canada, and I even spent seven years in California and Arizona. It was tough work, hard on the body. I finally settled in Vancouver, where I was diagnosed with CIDP. Now I use a wheelchair to help me manage. Every morning by 7:00, I’m out on the seawall and there’s all kinds of people out there and they stop and talk with me. I guess you could say I am a social guy – I like to meet new people.

| | https://metrovancouver.org/services/housing/PublishingImages/Lee.jpg, Lee

I like to consider things as they come. I think it’s very difficult to see the goodness in the world, especially when you’re not okay yourself. But something I live by and what I hope the world will live by is just go home and be nice to your family. If you want to make a difference, it starts with yourself.

| | https://metrovancouver.org/services/housing/PublishingImages/Monikka.jpg, Monikka

In this community, I found I had family again. If I’ve got something, I’m going to share it. I created a community space outside my apartment — a community table. It started when my friends came over to visit me, I said, “This is a lovely garden, let’s have a garden party.” And it just started from there. We get together, somebody brings chips, cheezies, or hors d’oeuvres. They’re always welcome when I can do it.

| | https://metrovancouver.org/services/housing/PublishingImages/Movana.jpg, Movana

Whether it’s doing some crafts, working together, or going out shopping. I do a lot of crocheting and knitting. I do a lot of baking – I’m good at that. I help older people, like my mom and neighbour. It’s important, you know, to be there for each other in good and bad times.

| | https://metrovancouver.org/services/housing/PublishingImages/Nella.jpg, Nella

I have never changed my phone number, and every so often – out of the blue – I’ll get a phone call from one of the kids I fostered. They always remember my home phone! Recently, in fact, I reconnected with one of the first foster boys I had when I was living in Campbell River. And, after all these years, I am going to go to Campbell River to see him.

| | https://metrovancouver.org/services/housing/PublishingImages/Penny.jpg, Penny

When I was young, she would volunteer at the local rescues and would help the dogs and cats daily. And sometimes she would bring one home! She also worked part time at senior care facilities and would even stay past her shift just to hang out and be that source of love and connection that the seniors in the home would need. My mom always put everyone else before herself, and that’s what shaped me today. I find satisfaction in helping people find housing in my role with Metro Vancouver Housing.

| | https://metrovancouver.org/services/housing/PublishingImages/Vienna.jpg, Vienna
