They are elected for a one-year term.

Chair Hurley was first elected as Board Chair in June 2024. Vice Chair McEwen will be serving his third term as Vice Chair.

Every day, over three million people — more than half of BC's population — rely on Metro Vancouver for clean water, clean air, and other services that are the foundation of livability in our region. The organization plans for and delivers regional utility services, including drinking water, sewers and wastewater treatment, and solid waste management. It also regulates air quality, plans for urban growth, manages a regional parks system, provides affordable rental housing, and serves as a regional federation.

Metro Vancouver is a federation of 21 municipalities, Electoral Area A, and one treaty First Nation. It comprises four separate legal entities, each governed by its own Board of Directors. Board directors are elected officials from member jurisdictions appointed by their respective councils, except for Electoral Area A where there is no elected council and the representative is elected directly by residents.

Representation on Metro Vancouver's four boards is based on population: each member jurisdiction has a number of directors proportional to its population, and each director receives one vote for every 20,000 residents, up to a maximum of five votes.

In the coming weeks, the Chair will determine the Board standing committees and their membership. These committees will then consider priorities, policies, and activities for the organization and make recommendations to the Board, which meets on the last Friday of each month.

Learn more about Chair Hurley on the City of Burnaby website.

Learn more about Vice Chair McEwen on the Village of Anmore website.

A full list of 2025 Metro Vancouver Board members and their vote allocations can be found here: metrovancouver.org/boards/board-members.

| 11/28/2025 8:00:00 AM | | Metro Vancouver Media Relations | media@metrovancouver.org | | |
