Update on Sewer Main Leak in the Olympic VillageUpdate on Sewer Main Leak in the Olympic Village

Yesterday morning, a sewer main leak happened on Columbia Street in Vancouver's Olympic Village. Metro Vancouver crews arrived immediately after being notified and were able to completely contain the leak by around 10:00 am with no additional flows contributing to the leak.

The leak was contained to a block of Columbia Street between West 1st and West 2nd avenues, with some overland flooding into a neighbouring building and the storm drain that goes into an open water feature in Hinge Park.

Environmental sampling in nearby parts of False Creek has taken place, and Vancouver Coastal Health has confirmed that the Dragon Boat Festival is safe to proceed this weekend.

Vacuum trucks and crews were on site to begin cleanup and contain any remaining sewage, with the street dry and ready for repairs by yesterday afternoon. Construction crews have been on site since yesterday evening to find the source of the sewer main break and begin repairs. Repair construction began this morning.

Now that the leak is contained, we have been working with the City of Vancouver to flush fresh water through Hinge Park. This involves adding more water to the wetlands to continue to improve the water quality until it increases to an acceptable level. The water is being dechlorinated before it enters the creek.

There has been no impact to service for residents.

6/21/2024 7:00:00 AMMetro Vancouver Media Relationsmedia@metrovancouver.org
