What We Do

Metro Vancouver is responsible for creating strategies to help the region prepare for population, housing, and employment growth. Doing so, helps protect both human and environmental health. We do this in part through Metro 2050, the Regional Growth Strategy — a shared regional vision that is stewarded by Metro Vancouver, developed collaboratively with and implemented by all member jurisdictions and TransLink.

We have a clear plan for managing growth in the region while:

  • Protecting ecologically sensitive areas, agricultural lands, and industrial/employment areas
  • Directing new developments to urban centres with public transit nearby
  • Making sure services like water, electricity, and transportation can be provided efficiently

We support affordable and sustainable choices for housing and transportation, a strong economy, climate action, and environmental protection. We do this by:

  • Implementing the Metro 2050 strategy
  • Collecting, analyzing, and sharing data
  • Conducting policy research to support decision making
  • Convening interested parties on planning issues of common interest
  • Advocating to other orders of government
  • Providing planning resources for member jurisdictions and others
  • Fostering leadership and innovation by looking at best practices and tools around the world
