Focusing growth into a network of centres and transit-oriented corridors supports a compact development pattern that is land and energy efficient, improves the cost-efficiency of infrastructure investments, and supports the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by reducing trips, trip length, and shifting modes of transportation.
Focusing growth into Urban Centres (UCs), Frequent Transit Development Areas (FTDAs), and Major Transit Growth Corridors (MTGCs) fosters the development of walkable, vibrant, and mixed-use communities that can support a range of services and amenities closer to where people live. Identifying FTDAs in appropriate locations within MTGCs also directs growth to locations with high quality and frequent transit service. This provides greater certainty to residents, TransLink, and member jurisdictions, to support integration of land use and transportation planning.
Key performance measure
Metro 2050 establishes the performance measure as percent of regional dwelling unit growth located in UCs, FTDAs, and MTGCs. The target is to locate 40% of regional dwelling unit growth in UCs and 28% in FTDAs between 2006 to 2041.
Progress
This key performance measure is on track. Between 2016 and 2021, 41% of the region's dwelling unit growth occurred in UCs. The total number of dwelling units in UCs grew from 283,795 to 315,430, an increase of 31,635 units over this five-year census period.
