How diversion rates are calculated and updated
Metro Vancouver collects information about the materials managed at private licensed facilities, including quantities received, recycled, composted, used for energy recovery, and disposed in landfills. Most construction and demolition waste recycling in the region takes place at private facilities licensed by Metro Vancouver.
The diversion rate for each private facility is calculated based on the total waste recycled in the previous calendar year divided by the total waste received at the facility. Diversion rates are updated yearly. The diversion rates and waste information are based on information that facilities have reported to Metro Vancouver.
Reducing waste
Metro Vancouver’s Integrated Solid Waste and Resource Management Plan sets ambitious goals for reducing the amount of the region’s waste that ends up in the landfill. Meeting these goals relies on increased recycling and reuse practices in the construction and demolition sector.
Publishing the diversion rates for private waste management facilities improves transparency for customers that rely on these facilities to recycle construction and demolition waste. It also helps to encourage best practices for recycling construction and demolition waste.
